Come for the setlist (half step, frank's, stagger lee, s>f, stella, casey jones, all in one show?!)...stay for the stella>Nfa, a moment of beauty never touched on otherwise in the Dead's career. Great show overall.

I've been looking for this tape since I lost track of my colletion oh so long ago. The Stella > NFA is one of the most beautiful pieces of work I've ever heard Garcia play. First heard it somewhere in the middle of Utah during a roadtrip and had to pull my truck over to take it all in. And they say alchemy doesn't exist...

Subject: Whole first set is great - ONE OF THE BEST 4'S IN HERE
Sound drops off during Lazy Lightning>Supplication (which is primo one of the best of 1978) and the mikes are a little too close to people clapping but this show open with 6 guns blazing and a very hot Half Step>Franklins, and for an audience the sound clarity is exceptional for the pre D5 period...
Magnificent second set with a blazing Scarlet>Fire I like as much as Giants Stadium from right before they went to Egypt. Other really notable S>F's for the year 4/24 Ill State is off the charts, 7/7 Red Rocks, 12/30 Pauley Pavilion. I am not sure what the best they are all really hot. Rest of this set is great especially the bitchen segway into Not Fade from Stella (the only one I am aware of). Magnificent!!

Thanks to the explorers who first unearthed this Stella-NFA pair. There is still treasure in these thar hills....
At the end of Stella, Garcia plays the NFA rhythm, but instead of using that song's E-A chording, he employes the same chords he's been playing in Stella. And it works! A magical creation.
The real surprise comes in NFA. Garcia just kind of steps back and eyes the solo; and with the great restraint of a master, he takes his time with some small patterns in the low register. You just know he's going to come up with something.
Around the four minute mark, you can start to make out the strain of the new (old) theme. At 6:40 it's very clear, and at 8:40 unmistakeable. They return to NFA around 9:20.
Thanks again for the upload, and kudos to the initial reviewers. Seek, and ye shall find...

Amazing. So creative.
Heartfelt Stella. OK, smooth transition into Not Fadeaway.
No wait! It's still Stella.
No it's not. Not Fadeaway!
Nope. Still Stella.
Masters
Don't miss the 4-3-85 transition of Throwing Stones > Sugar Magnolia. They play both tunes simultaneously (perfectly) for a minute or so. Too bad few know about this one. (Spread the word)

Listened to this at work on a crappy little built in speaker on low fi...and still enjoyed it. First set is great except TLEO and Row Jimmy were a little too slow IMHO...and tape jam missed the start of Mississippi, but oh well. As mentioned...Stella/NFA is sweet, and a good if not superior rendition of Scarlet-Fire (but a good redition of a great song is worth the time!). Get it!

Seems like the band wanted to schedule some shows in the south to keep warm in December. They sure lit up the folks in Jackson, MS. I had this show in my collection as a questionable AUD... it was one of the last tapes I acquired before technology made tape trading a thing of the past some 6-7 years ago. Here on the internet archive, this show comes from the same source as my cassette, but without innumerable cassette gens. I rate this show 4 stars for music quality though it probably deserves no more than 3 for recording quality. But if you do nothing else, check out the Stella Blue->NFA. Garcia plays Stella Blue so beautifully that it can make you cry, but just as the music is about to break your heart, the band blends in the strains of Not Fade Away. It's seamless and powerful, and you'll wonder why they didn't do it this way more often. This is magic in a bottle, and it is not to be missed.
